CHAPTER SIXTEEN
âIf you keep cooking for me, youâll never be allowed to leave,â I said the next morning, wandering into my kitchen.
Dan stood at the stove, shirtless, flipping pancakes with finesse.
âMaybe thatâs part of my master plan.â
I wrapped my arms around his waist and pressed a kiss to his shoulder blade. âThis is the second time now and you havenât burnt a thing.â
Chuckling, he turned away from the stove and tucked me into his side. âItâs been years since I burnt the casserole at your mamâs. You have to let it go someday.â
I pursed my lips. âPretty sure you destroyed more than a casserole.â I rested my chin on his pec and grinned up at him. âIf I remember correctly, you were banned from the kitchen for every single Sunday dinner after you burnt the gravy too.â
âItâs liquid. I have no idea how you burn gravy,â he scoffed, the amused twinkle in his eye softening his words.
âMy mother doesnât agree with you.â I patted him on the chest, my eyes dropping to the bubbling pancake in the skillet. He slipped the spatula under the drying batter and flipped it. Perfectly golden on the bottom. âIf Phoebe sees you flipping pancakes like that, you definitely wonât be allowed to leave.â
I nabbed a pancake from the prepared stack and stepped away. He shook his head at my impatience while I pulled out a stool and settled in for the show. I drank him in. The rising sun caressed his naked back and set his auburn hair on fire. He hummed happily to himself as he worked through the last of the batter. He really was something. How Iâd gone five years without him was beyond me.
âWhen does your mother normally drop Phoebe off?â He placed the stack of pancakes on the island and turned back to grab plates, cutlery and drinks for us. I wasnât lying when I said heâd never be allowed to leave. A girl could get used to this.
âAround six, but I have to meet the girls at one.â We had the entire morning to ourselves. What a novelty.
He grinned at me. âWhat shall we do with ourselves?â
I eyed him. âI canât tell if youâre genuinely asking or if youâre going to drag me back to bed.â
âIâm never going to get enough of you.â He reached for my hand across the worktop weâd fucked on last night. My eyes stuck on his huge hand engulfing mine. Has he cleaned the counter? âBut right now, I feel like we should get out of this flat and enjoy the morning, just us two.â
âDo you have anything in mind?â I asked, distracted as I tried to figure out if the island looked shiny because of the surface and the sun or because heâd wiped it over. I really couldnât tell.
âWe could go ice skating.â He tugged on my hand, pulling my attention back to him. âYou never did answer my text asking if youâd been, and the rink is still open, so we couldâ¦â
âThat sounds great.
